Session Description
Digital devices are now woven into the fabric of daily family life—but when screen use disrupts parent–child interactions, it can interfere with children's emotional and social development. This presentation will introduce the 2026 digital media guidelines developed by the presenter in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics' Screen Use Policy Guideline Committee, review current research on the impact of digital media on child development, and explore the concept of “technoference” and its implications for parenting and child well-being. Participants will gain practical, developmentally informed, and relationship-centered strategies to support families in building healthy digital media habits.

About the Speaker
Dr. Madigan is a clinical psychologist, professor, and Canada Research Chair in Child Mental Health and Wellbeing at the University of Calgary. Her research focuses on how early social experiences and relationships shape children's learning and mental health. She has received over $10 million in federal research funding and has published more than 250 academic papers. She has given over 300 media interviews for news outlets globally, and her research findings are routinely integrated into guidelines and policy briefs by prominent organizations, including the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General. She is internationally recognized as a leader in her field, ranked among the top 1% of cited scholars worldwide by Clarivate's Web of Science and among the top 25 most productive psychologists globally for research quality and quantity over the past five years, according to ScholarsGPS. Dr. Madigan is dedicated to translating research into practice and policy. She applies her expertise by serving on the American Academy of Pediatrics' Screen Use Policy Guideline Committee and the Advisory Board for the Canadian Paediatric Society's Centre for Healthy Screen Use. Dr. Madigan is the only Canadian to serve on the Editorial Board for JAMA Pediatrics.
