HEADS-ED Under 6 with Dr. Mario Cappelli
Session Description
Training participants will learn about the HEADS-ED Under 6, a screening and triage tool that identifies and communicates mental health and developmental concerns during infancy and early childhood. Through interactive clinical vignettes, participants will learn to administer and score the HEADS-ED Under 6, compare their scores with a standardized score, and discuss priority referral decisions. Following training, participants will be able to implement this free and publicly available tool in their workplaces. The tool and ongoing supports can be found at https://www.heads-ed.com/en/home and are available in French and English.

Registering for the Session
Individuals must register using their own IEMHP Learning Portal Accounts. For organizations that wish to register 10 or more participants, please reach out to iemhp.learning@sickkids.ca to request a bulk enrollment and invoice. There are no discounts available for this offering.
The session is best suited for participants who:
- Have foundational knowledge of infant and early childhood development
- Are familiar with mental health or developmental assessment in applied settings
- Are positioned to use a screening/triage tool in real-world practice, rather than purely academic learning
About the Speaker
Dr. Mario Cappelli has been supporting children, youth, young adults and their families with emotional, behavioural, and learning challenges for many years. He is a trusted clinician, a mentor, a mental health leader and advocate in the Ottawa community. Dr. Cappelli is also Senior Child and Youth Mental Health Clinician-Scientist at the Knowledge Institute for Child and Youth Mental Health & Addiction. He is an Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa, Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Carleton University and a Research Associate at the CHEO Research Institute. Dr. Cappelli is currently leading several provincial projects that aim to improve service and clinical pathways to child and youth mental health and addiction services. Dr. Cappelli and his team also developed the HEADS-ED and HEADS-ED Under 6 mental health and addiction screening tools that are used throughout Ontario and Canada to guide assessment and treatment recommendations. He has published extensively and presented his research nationally and internationally.
